Aquila Clean Energy x Entrix Partnership for Two BESS Projects in Germany: 106 MW / 212 MWh

20 / 11 / 24

Aquila Clean Energy EMEA has initiated two of the most advanced and largest battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Germany, selecting Entrix to manage the optimisation and market participation of these projects as they enter the German market

Here is a first glimpse of the BESS project in Strübbel. Paul Schacht, Project Manager at Aquila Clean Energy, presents it in this video.

Located in Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony, these projects have a combined power capacity of 106 MW and a total energy capacity of 212 MWh. Both are expected to become operational until early 2026 and will be optimised by Entrix, a leading specialist in AI-driven multi-market optimisation and trading for BESS. The projects are funded by investors from Aquila Capital.

With a capacity of 50 MW and 100 MWh, the first project is located in Strübbel, Schleswig-Holstein and the second one in Wetzen, Lower Saxony and will have a capacity of 56 MW and 112 MWh.

“Die Optimierung von Batterien über alle Märkte hinweg ist entscheidend, um den langfristigen Wert unserer Projekte voll auszuschöpfen. Kilian Leykam, Director Energy Storage Commercial at Aquila Clean Energy EMEA, said: “The optimisation of batteries across all market segments is essential to realise the full long-term value of our projects. We found with Entrix the right partner to execute such a leading multi-market strategy for our Strübbel and Wetzen projects in Germany. It will enable the batteries to maximise their performance while enhancing power system stability and supporting the integration of renewables in the power system.”

The partnership with Entrix covers the full stack of energy markets, including ancillary services (FCR, aFRR), and trading in the day-ahead and intraday wholesale markets (DA-A, ID-A, ID-C).

Steffen Schülzchen, CEO of Entrix, said: “The long-term collaboration with Aquila Clean Energy on these two pioneering battery storage projects is a strong sign of trust in our expertise and our market-leading trading performance. Through close, collaborative partnership, we ensure the best possible lifetime operation of these storage systems. We are excited to create real added value for the energy transition together with Aquila Clean Energy.”

Entrix’s multi-market optimisation is driven by AI-based algorithms that automatically consider real-time market conditions. In addition to maximising profitability through participation across all markets, including ancillary services as well as wholesale trading, Entrix places great emphasis on close project collaboration and technical integration. This approach allows for precise control of the assets, minimising downtime, and optimising the operational life and durability of the batteries.

These facilities are the first of the 14 planned battery storage projects to be implemented in Germany by Aquila Clean Energy EMEA, with a total capacity of over 900 MW. They are part of the 4.5 GW BESS portfolio that the company manages across Europe.

Looking Ahead: Upcoming Milestones

In the coming months, key milestones will be reached for these projects. We will continuously update on progress and further developments within our partnership.
